Summative Assessment 1 Topic: Kaupapa Kōrero‐Essay

Aim: Students will demonstrate knowledge of how a range of factors and influences can affect health outcomes of individuals, family/whānau and communities.

Learning Outcome: 1 Identify socio‐political and cultural determinants of health that affect the individual, whānau/family, groups and communities and analyse the implication for health outcomes.

Task: Ngā Tuhi: Essay

The Dahlgren and Whitehead (1991) health determinants model describes the range of factors that influence the health of individuals and communities. Write an essay that critically discusses the model provided, showing how these factors can affect health outcomes of individuals, family/whānau and communities.

Your essay should include:

1. An outline of three significant historical landmarks that introduced the concepts of the social determinants of health.
2. Analyse the Dahlgren and Whitehead (1991) model to show a clear understanding of each layer and how they interconnect using examples to support the discussion.
3. Analyse why inequities and disparities exist between different groups in society. Include statistical data where appropriate to support your discussion.
4. Select ONE determinant from the ‘living and working conditions’ (refer to the diagram above) and ONE group within society (example‐ Māori, Pacifica, immigrants, elderly) and discuss how the selected determinant influences the health outcomes of this group.
